Private School College Counseling

One-on-one attention that works alongside your school's college counseling office, not in place of it.

NexGen Advising is an independent admissions counseling firm and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any specific private school.

Who This Is For

  • Families whose students attend a private or independent school
  • Families who want more individualized time than a shared school counselor can offer
  • Students navigating a highly competitive internal peer group
  • Families who want an outside, unbiased perspective alongside the school's guidance

What Makes This Different

  • School counselor caseloads that can run well over a hundred students each
  • A dedicated advisor tracking one student's plan from grade 8 onward
  • An outside read on fit and positioning, free of any institutional pressure
  • Coordination with, never contradiction of, the school's own process

How We Work Alongside Your School

A complement to your school's counseling office, not a replacement

Private school counseling offices bring institutional knowledge, established relationships with admissions officers, and control over the official school profile and recommendation process. We add the individualized bandwidth and longer planning horizon that a shared counselor, however excellent, rarely has time to provide to any one student.

What We Add

  • Regular one-on-one meetings from grade 8 or 9 onward
  • A milestone-driven plan tracked across all four years
  • Deep essay and application development time most school counselors can't offer
  • An honest, outside perspective on fit and positioning

What We Defer To Your School On

  • Official school profile, transcript, and recommendation submission
  • School-specific policies, deadlines, and internal procedures
  • Your counselor's direct relationships with specific admissions offices

FAQs

Questions about private school college counseling

My child's private school already has a college counseling office. Why would we need this too?

School counseling offices are valuable but typically manage far more students per counselor than an independent advisor does, which limits how much individualized time any one student gets. We provide the additional one-on-one attention, longer planning horizon, and outside perspective that complement, not replace, your school's office.

Will working with an independent counselor create conflicting advice?

We coordinate our guidance to align with, not contradict, your school counselor's recommendations and institutional knowledge. When schools have specific policies or procedures, such as letters of recommendation, school profile submissions, or internal deadlines, we work within them rather than around them.

Are you affiliated with any specific private school?

No. NexGen Advising is an independent college admissions counseling firm and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any specific private or independent school. We work with families across many different schools.

Is private school counseling different from public school counseling?

The core admissions process is the same, but private school families often navigate a more competitive internal peer group, school-specific reporting and grading conventions, and higher expectations around outcomes, all of which we factor into our strategy.
